Astor Round Back Dining Chair in Spiced Chestnut and Claystone

A round back dining chair, sculpted for the sitter

Most dining chairs are rectangles you sit against; the Astor is a curve you settle into. Its round back sweeps around the sitter in one continuous line – part chair back, part embrace – upholstered in Claystone, a soft greige that reads warm in lamplight and cool in daylight. Below, solid wood legs in Spiced Chestnut bring a rich, reddish-brown warmth that keeps the pale upholstery from floating away. At 22 inches wide, the Astor gives you two extra inches over a standard dining chair, and you feel every one of them.

Why the curve matters

A straight chair back supports you; a curved one contains you. The Astor’s round back wraps slightly at the sides, which does two things: it makes the sit feel more private and relaxed, and it gives the chair a sculptural presence that straight-backed chairs cannot match. From across the room, a set of Astors reads as a design decision, not just seating. The Claystone upholstery keeps the drama in check – it is a quiet, stony neutral – while the Spiced Chestnut legs add the depth. If your dining room leans modern or transitional and wants one piece with real form, start here, then browse the straighter lines in our dining chairs collection for contrast.

The wider sit, honestly assessed

Twenty-two inches is generous for a dining chair, and it changes the experience: more room to shift, cross a leg, or settle in for a long conversation. The trade-off is table math – plan on slightly fewer chairs per side than you would with 20-inch models, roughly two Astors where three standard chairs would fit on a shorter table. For most 72-inch and longer tables, though, six Astors line up beautifully. The 35-inch back height keeps the profile a touch lower than standard, which suits rooms where you want the chairs to sit visually quiet beneath a statement light fixture or art wall.
